Prevent Drain Clogs

Save yourself the hassle of a clogged kitchen drain by following these simple tips:

  • Don’t put stringy, tough, fibrous waste into the garbage disposal. Just a bit of celery and banana peel can quickly knot up the garbage disposal.
  • Throw coffee grounds away in the garbage or add them to your mulch pile.
  • Use a screen or drain-grate to cover the drain’s opening and minimize problems with hair and soap scum.
  • Don’t pour fats/cooking oils down the kitchen drain. Fats and oils often solidify in the pipes to create clogs. Pour grease into a coffee can and then throw away.
  • Pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes; then chase it down with very hot water. Then, throw a handful of baking soda into the drain and follow it with hot water.
